Salty Tunes

"Classical, jazz, and pop are becoming a new sound." (BNN)

The Salty Tunes are an ensemble founded in October 2022 to explore musical boundaries: classical meets jazz, pop, and funk. Well-known works are reinterpreted—always with scope for improvisation and individual expression.

The idea arose from a special request at the Karlsruhe University of Music for jazzed-up opera arias. The band quickly found common ground, both musically and personally, and implemented Daniel Salzmann's arrangements.

Since its inception, the project has continued to evolve, with more and more classical works being rearranged and enhanced with exciting rhythms and harmonic variations. Highlights include Puccini's Lucevan le stelle (from Tosca), Nessun dorma (from Turandot), Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 , Tchaikovsky's June, Vivaldi's Spring, Mozart's Rondo alla Turca, Schubert's Leise flehen meine Lieder, Ravel's Pavane, Debussy's Clair de lune , and Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King —all newly composed by Daniel Salzmann.

The current lineup consists of Daniel Salzmann on piano, Leon Winkler on saxophone, Paul Cervenec on bass, and Tim Brucker on drums. Together, they create an energetic, multifaceted sound that combines swinging, groovy, and lyrical elements. This fusion of the familiar and the new opens up soundscapes that delight classical music lovers and jazz fans alike.

The band performs regularly in Karlsruhe and the surrounding area – including in jazz clubs, the Baden State Library, the Baden State Museum in Karlsruhe Palace, the Sandkorn Theater and the Hemingway Lounge.

Vogel&Winkler Duo

Lucian Vogel and Leon Winkler met at a jazz session, which quickly developed into a duo project that soon combined jazz standards with their own compositions in a unique way. Their music combines catchy, groovy pieces with swing and simplicity.

For example, the duo experiments with the pure major chord and its diverse combination possibilities to open up new sonic spaces. In another piece, sus chords represent the central motif, while in other compositions, the floating
The sound of major seven chords sets the tone. These stylistic focuses lend the pieces additional depth and make the two musicians' musical journey particularly exciting and directly tangible for the audience.

Lucian Vogel, a jazz piano student at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, inspires audiences with the sophistication and creativity of his compositions and improvisations. His musical career began with the violin, which he played in various ensembles. Later, his focus shifted to jazz and piano. He won third prize at the Jugend Jazzt competition with the band Jazzlightyear. Through the delicate design and structure of his improvisations and compositions, his music begins to float and breathe.

Leon Winkler, saxophone student at the Mannheim University of Music, is not only the bandleader of the HM Big Band, but also the saxophonist of the band Salty Tunes and has received several awards: He received the Baden Cultural Fund Award, the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Scholarship
and the Bruno Frey Prize.

With their new duo project, the two venture into new musical territory and invite the audience to follow this special path with them.

HM Big Band

Leon Winkler has led the HM Big Band from Sinzheim near Baden-Baden since September 2024. Engagements in 2025 have taken the HM Big Band to the stages of the Fest am See in Karlsruhe and the Watthalden Festival, to the SWR television program, and regularly to the Baden-Baden concert shell.

The HM Big Band can look back on a long tradition of professional leadership – Christian Steuber, Sean Guptill, Gesa Petersen, and Christoph Rehorst have shaped the band into a swinging and grooving unit. Leon Winkler builds on this legacy to further advance the band and provide new impetus, without losing sight of its proven strengths.

The connection to big band music is evident in the decisive initial spark for Leon Winkler's musical work. The most formative recording for his development and motivation is "Against All Odds " by the Phil Collins Big Band. It embodies what is particularly dear to the bandleader's heart: sophisticated arrangements, modern big band repertoire, and surprising, innovative pieces that one might not initially expect from a big band.

The HM Big Band's repertoire ranges from swing classics to Latin and modern jazz. Fusion jazz, funk, and even unusual genres like alternative rock enrich the program, with pieces such as "Morocco" by The Rippingtons , "The Grid Generation" by Cory Wong, "Moj jest ten kawalek podlogi" by Mr Zoob , and "Chips n Salsa" by the Phil Collins Big Band. This stylistic diversity ensures a diverse and exciting concert experience.

Leon Winkler complements the program with exceptional arrangements of lesser-known jazz standards. This means that even die-hard jazz fans will discover something new at every concert. The band is particularly pleased to be working with singer Maria Hene and to continue to welcome former bandleader Christoph Rehorst as a regular singer.
